There is an emergency situation with international parcels across South Korea. Suspicious international mail with similar characteristics has been detected and the police have officially issued a warning. On July 21, the National Police Agency announced that similar cases had begun to be confirmed across the country, with people who opened yellow mail sent overseas in the Ulsan area complaining of symptoms such as dizziness since the previous day. As of that morning, there had been six mailings reported to police.
Incident characteristics
What’s interesting is that all of these mailers were using yellow or black envelopes and had the same sender, “P.O.Box 100561 – 003777, Taipei Taiwan”. To date, police and military authorities are focused on determining what was inside these mailings.
Victimization
At a welfare facility for people with disabilities in West-dong, Dong-gu, Ulsan, the director and three employees complained of dizziness and difficulty breathing after opening a yellow mailer. They were immediately transported to the hospital. Care must be taken to prevent instances like this from recurring.
Advice from the police
Police officials said there have been no reports of the package being opened in other parts of the country, but urged caution for anyone who has received similar mail. “Don’t open it,” he said, “and report it to the nearest police station or call 112. In the meantime, while investigations into these mail bombs are moving quickly, the public needs to be vigilant about their safety.
